Survivor Series History: Survivor Series 1991 - The Undertaker vs. Hulk Hogan - The First Singles Match In Survivor Series History #wwe #undertaker #hulkhogan #hulkamania #survivorseries #survivorseries1991 #thegravestchallenge
Survivor Series Rewind
This week I have been chronicling the Undertaker's early Survivor Series moments. The next moment I will highlight is Survivor Series 1991, which took place on November 27th. (I was only one years old at the time, yes I was already a Big fan.) Here, Hulk Hogan defends the WWF Heavyweight Championship against the Undertaker. The match-up was titled "The Gravest Challenge." A title befitting the rampage of the Undertaker, which lead to him being the number one contender so early in his career. This is the first singles competition in Survivor Series history for the WWF (WWE) World Heavyweight Championship. This is also the first singles non-dark match in Survivor Series history. The "Gravest Challenge" ended with the start of the Undertaker's first title reign, making him the youngest WWF champion at the time, at age 26. Unfortunately for the Undertaker and his fans (ME!) he lost the title 6 days later at the pay-per-view event "This Tuesday in Texas." A match I refuse to relive, in fact whenever I re-watch this event I literally fast forward past the entire match, hoping it would simply go away.
History of the Match
At the time of Survivor Series 1991, The Undertaker was still on his heel run in the WWF (WWE). He decimated every superstar he came across. He also made his Wrestlemania Debut at Wrestlemania VII, defeating "Superfly" Jimmy Snuka. (Note: My NaNa would say the sinner's prayer after watching Jimmy Snuka jump around the ring in nothing but those animal print shorts.) The Undertaker's fame soared during his longstanding feud with the Ultimate Warrior which won them 1991 "Feud of the Year" from Pro Wrestling Illustrated. During this era, the Undertaker fell under the guidance of manager Paul Bearer, thank God! I could not understand the Undertaker's link to Brother Love in any way shape or form. (And No! Brother Love is not Paul Bearer, in middle school the boys and I always had this debate). The Undertaker's first year in the WWE was unprecedented and left no question as to why he was the number one contender the WWF World Heavyweight Championship.
The Details of the Match
As Hulk Hogan did his Hulkamania entrance the Undertaker gave him a look of disgust. The Undertaker never had respect for wrestlers that craved the fans approval. The beginning of the match was your typical early 90s wrestling match that displayed skill and athleticism. The Undertaker then demonstrated his aggressiveness as he choked Hulk Hogan with cables outside of the ring. The big win for the Undertaker was due to the interference by the Nature Boy Rick Flair. No matter how the Undertaker won, he won. He rightfully deserved his first title reign...even if it was only 6 days. See below of the actual match :).
Pretty Brit Signing Off :)
